Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated from October 23-27.  As you recall: this is a national week for of presenting drug prevention program(s), as well as, drug awareness for grades PK-12. We will be focusing on Kindness and teaching Empathy in our Red Ribbon Week!
Here are the activities the “Culture club” has come up with for the week along with descriptions and resources:
  • Monday 10/23 –  Wear Red – Draw attention to the messages of Red Ribbon  Week (Red Ribbon wrist bands will be distributed) (Encourage the kids to wear red all week!)
  • Tuesday Thursday: Send home the HOME CONNECTION pledge activity to be returned by Friday.  . Please keep a tally of how many students return the pledge sheet with at least one adult signature.  The highest participation (%) class will receive extra recess on MONDAY, 10/30.
  • Wednesday – Morning meeting Focus: Friendship – what can you do today for someone else – today.
  • Thursday – Take a stand – lend a hand – you will have a hand for each student.  This can be a writing activity on what upstanders look like.
  • Friday: Empathy Game?!
Here are some ways you can use the empathy situation cards:
  • Pair up and have each partner pick a card they will “act out,” then have a conversation taking on the various emotions – see if you can make each other feel better or share each others’ excitement, etc
  • Ask your student to select a card and tell a story about a time they experienced that or when they saw someone else exhibiting the emotion displayed, how they felt, what they did (or what they could have done)
  • Ask your child to pick a card and draw the emotion they see on the card, or the situation the person was in to cause this emotion – this will help them think about someone else going through the emotion more in depth

We also want to provide you with some ideas for community circle time or possible writing prompts: There are two templates attached for those of you who like to use special templates.  Some ideas:

  • Today, I pledge:
  • Say no to_ , Yes to__
  • Kindness is…
  • I am kind at school by
  • My greatness is
  • My greatest kindness so far is…
  • What is kindness?
  • What is making good choices?
